TUSKYS WILL START PILOTING A FRANCHISING MODEL “VERY SOON” AS PART OF A STRATEGY TO EXPAND ITS FOOTPRINT
“There is someone who is running a successful retail business in Kibera (an informal settlement in Nairobi) and all they need is a bit of support to make their business more modern, support to access a wider range of products from manufacturers, and to better engage with customers. We can give that to the retailer as a package and make some money out of it, and the retailer also gets to expand their business,” says Tuskys CEO Dan Githua.

Tuskys sign financing deal with KCB
Tuskys Supermarket has
entered into a financing facility deal with Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) that
will see suppliers get payment before their invoices fall due.
The financing deal
dubbed ‘Biashara Club’ will also see small and medium sized companies (SMEs)
that supply the retail chain get loans from the bank at a preferential rate.
The signing also comes
in the wake of a drive by leading supermarket chains to implement the signed
agreement between them and the Kenya Manufacturers Association (KMA) September
last year.
Kenyan manufacturers
in September wrote to the leading supermarkets; Nakumatt, Tuskys and Naivas
seeking a meeting to resolve the issue of delayed payments, which they said was
squeezing their working capital.
The leading retail
chains were entangled in a multi-billion shilling debt row with suppliers who
accused them of refusing to pay for goods delivered to their stores. (x254.co)
