Speaking to Capital FM Business King'ara says the Uchumi business needs stability rather than growth/FILE

Speaking to Capital FM Business King’ara says the Uchumi business needs stability rather than growth.
“I was hired for growth, but the business doesn’t need growth right now, it needs stability sooner rather than later,” King’ara said.
He said that the government needs to pump in more money to the retailer with time being of essence.
“It’s a ticking time bomb, the sooner they reinvest in the business the better,” he explained.
The major issue according to King’ara is suppliers not stocking goods due to debts the retailer owes them.
He however has faith in the current Chief Executive Julius Kipng’etich.

“Kipng’etich is doing a good job. The suppliers were not being paid by the previous management, though they are coming back, they are still finding it hard to supply, that’s why the business needs government support,” he added.
...The move came months the firm closed its operations in Tanzania and Uganda in a reorganisation exercise intended to stop financial haemorrhaging...

TUSKYS WILL START PILOTING A FRANCHISING MODEL “VERY SOON” AS PART OF A STRATEGY TO EXPAND ITS FOOTPRINT

“There is someone who is running a successful retail business in Kibera (an informal settlement in Nairobi) and all they need is a bit of support to make their business more modern, support to access a wider range of products from manufacturers, and to better engage with customers. We can give that to the retailer as a package and make some money out of it, and the retailer also gets to expand their business,” says Tuskys CEO Dan Githua.

TUSKYS 2016 DEALS THAT WILL DRIVE GROWTH OF BUSINESS AND STABILITY

Tuskys sign financing deal with KCB
Tuskys Supermarket has entered into a financing facility deal with Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) that will see suppliers get payment before their invoices fall due.

The financing deal dubbed ‘Biashara Club’ will also see small and medium sized companies (SMEs) that supply the retail chain get loans from the bank at a preferential rate.
The signing also comes in the wake of a drive by leading supermarket chains to implement the signed agreement between them and the Kenya Manufacturers Association (KMA) September last year.
Kenyan manufacturers in September wrote to the leading supermarkets; Nakumatt, Tuskys and Naivas seeking a meeting to resolve the issue of delayed payments, which they said was squeezing their working capital.
The leading retail chains were entangled in a multi-billion shilling debt row with suppliers who accused them of refusing to pay for goods delivered to their stores. (x254.co)
